Why We Plan in Courses, Not Single Sessions
Great skin results are rarely about one appointment. We explain why treatments work best as part of a considered plan, how results build over time and why your treatment course should evolve with your skin.
When it comes to skin treatments, one of the most common questions we’re asked is: “How many sessions will I need?”
The answer is rarely one.
That doesn’t mean a single treatment can’t make a difference. It absolutely can. But if we’re trying to meaningfully improve concerns such as pigmentation, acne scarring, texture or overall skin quality, we’re usually working with biological processes that take place gradually.
At SKINMENU, we prefer to think in treatment courses and longer-term plans, rather than isolated appointments. Here’s why.
Your skin changes gradually
Most skin treatments work by triggering a process rather than creating an instant final result.
Laser, microneedling, chemical peels and injectable skin treatments all work differently, but many rely on your skin responding in the weeks following treatment.
For example, a laser treatment may target excess pigment or stimulate a wound-healing response. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injury to encourage repair and remodelling. Some injectable treatments stimulate processes that continue long after you leave the clinic.
What happens during your appointment is only the beginning.
Your skin then needs time to respond, recover and remodel before we assess what it needs next.
Each session builds on the last
Think of a treatment course as a series of controlled steps towards a specific goal.
With pigmentation, we may gradually target excess pigment while using skincare to help regulate the processes contributing to it.
With acne scarring, we may need to work at different depths and target different components of the scar over several sessions.
With overall skin quality, repeated stimulation can produce a cumulative improvement that a single treatment is unlikely to achieve.
This is why we don’t judge the success of a treatment plan solely by what your skin looks like a few days after an appointment.
We’re looking at the trajectory of your skin over time.
Some skin concerns need more than one approach
Another reason we plan in courses is that skin concerns rarely exist in isolation.
Someone coming to us for acne scarring may also have active breakouts, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and uneven texture.
Someone concerned about pigmentation may have a combination of sun damage, inflammation and deeper areas of pigment.
Trying to address everything with the same treatment at every appointment isn’t always the best approach.
Instead, your SKINMENU may combine different treatments at different stages.
That could mean starting with skincare, introducing a chemical peel, progressing to laser, or combining technologies when appropriate.
The course is built around the goal, not around repeatedly performing the same treatment.
More treatment isn’t always better
Planning a course doesn’t mean treating as frequently or aggressively as possible.
Your skin needs time to recover between treatments, and the appropriate interval will depend on what we’re doing.
Treating too aggressively can create unnecessary inflammation and, in some skin types, increase the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Sometimes the best thing we can do between appointments is leave your skin alone and allow the biological response we’ve triggered to take place.
A good treatment plan considers not only what we do, but also when we do it.
Your skincare is part of the course
What happens between your appointments matters.
A well-planned skincare regime can help support the results of your in-clinic treatments, manage ongoing triggers and prepare your skin for the next stage of your plan.
For concerns such as acne and hyperpigmentation, this can be particularly important.
If we treat pigmentation in clinic but do nothing to address the processes encouraging new pigment production, we’re only addressing part of the problem.
This is why your SKINREGIME and SKINMENU are designed to work together.
Your course isn’t set in stone
When we recommend a course of treatment, it is based on how your skin presents at that point in time.
But skin changes.
You might respond more quickly than expected. We might decide your skin needs longer between sessions. One concern may improve while another becomes the new priority.
That’s why we reassess throughout your treatment journey.
We don’t believe in completing sessions simply because they were written down at the beginning. Your treatment plan should evolve with your skin.
So, how many sessions will I need?
It depends on your starting point, your skin concern, the treatment being performed and the result we’re trying to achieve.
Some patients may see a noticeable improvement after one treatment. Others may need three, four, six or more sessions as part of a longer-term plan.
During The SKINMENU Consultation, we’ll give you a realistic idea of what we recommend based on your skin.
And importantly, we’ll explain why.
The SKINMENU approach
We created SKINMENU around the idea that good skin treatment should be planned.
Rather than looking at your appointments as individual treatments, we look at how each one fits into the bigger picture.
Your SKINGOALS tell us where we’re going. Your SKINMENU is how we plan to get there.
Because when you’re trying to create meaningful change in your skin, the question isn’t simply “What treatment should I book?”
It’s “What does my skin need next?”
